So, I left school early yesterday and I didn't go today because my throat hurts reaaaallllyyyyy bad. I may have strep cause its been going around the school. Also, I have a weird obsession with making little origami frogs. Lol. I don't know why, I just love making them! I like coloring them too! I have a lot, I'll put up a picture later :) And finally, ALL TIME LOW! Anyone know that band? Ehh? Well, Its like my favorite band (its a tie with ATL and BOTDF) And I absolute LOVE Alex Gaskarth and Jack Barkat. All Time Low is having a concert. And even though its a bit away, my day said that if I don't miss any school between now and the concert, then I can go! Its a small concert, so I might get to MEET them :D I promise, I'm not trying to brag or anything, I'm just super excitedddd!

Hello girls! So September 1,2010 is Best Bones Forever's 1st birthday!I thought I could share some information about this wonderful site to you since it is all about girls and how inportant it is do tak care of your body!

So what is Best Bones Forever all about?

The Best Bones Forever!™ Campaign encourages girls to get active and eat more foods with calcium and vitamin D. Why is this important? Because getting lots of physical activity and snacking on foods with calcium and vitamin D arewhat's best for your bones! Healthy bones are important to help you grow strong and stay strong forever!

Interesting Facts About Our Body:

There are more than 200 bones in our body!Wow thats a ton to take care of!

Our bones are made of Collagen andCalcium phosphate

Bones also contain water, minerals, and cells that grow and change

When you're a baby, you have more than 300 bones, but by the time you're an adult you'll only have 206

2 Reasons Why You Need Calcium:

Calcium makes bones as strong as steel!

When your body makes new bone tissue, it first lays down a framework ofcollagen. Then, tiny crystals of calcium from your blood spread throughout the collagen framework. The hard crystals fill in all the nooks and crannies. Calcium and collagen work together to make bones strong and flexible.

Too little calcium makes bones weak.

Your body needs calcium to do lots of things. Calcium helps your muscles work so you can throw a softball. It helps send out nerve impulses. If you touch something hot, for instance, your brain quickly gets and sends the message to say, "Ouch!" and move your hand away. Calcium also helps your body heal from cuts and scrapes.

Every cell in your body needs calcium. Your bones store calcium for your blood and cells. If your body doesn't get enough calcium, which can be found in some foods and drinks, it takes it from your bones. And that can make your bones weak. From the day you're born, your bones are built and strengthened with calcium. In fact, when you're in your 20s, your bones will be their strongest ever.

Bone Vocab:

Calcium —a mineral that helps to form bones and keeps them hard and strong. Most of the calcium in the body is stored in bones and teeth. The remaining calcium is contained in body tissues, blood, and other body fluids. Calcium can be found in somefoods and drinks.

Bone-strengthening activity —any activity that produces a force on the bones and promotes bone growth and strength. This force is produced most often by impact on the ground in activities like running and jumping.

Bone density —also known as "bone mineral density," the degree of strength of the inside of the bones

So Girls what do you think?Do you take good care of your bones to keep your body strong and fit?Is any of this stuff new to you?Have you learned about this in school?Have you ever heard of this site?Do you think it is important to take care of your bones? Can you name every bone in your body with no help?I love to hear what you have to say after all thats what AK is for!

Don't forget to check out the awesome site!

www.bestbonesforever.gov

After checking it out I have some really great questions for you!

What did you learn from the site? What was your favorite part of it?Is there anything you think they should add to the site? What do you think of the logo? How would you rate it on a scale of 1-10?Comment and let me know!

Hi my name is Gina! :)

I want to talk about smoking. This activity is discusting and impulsive. Its not fair to your body or you! Its like buying a bottle of dirt or an invisible dog.. Did you knowcigarette smoking caused an estimated 12 million deaths, including 4.1 million deaths from cancer, and 5.5 million deaths from cardiovascular diseases. ANDWhen smoking tobacco, the user inhales tar, nicotine, carbon monoxide, and 200 known poisons into the lungsAND TEENS THINK ITS COOL! Is practicly slowly killing yourself cool?! What do you think? When I found out my best friend smoked i was devistated. She's the fun, loving, caring person i know so when she started smoking I wanted to do somthing about it. But i did'nt. So i watched her slowly changing into a slacker and messed up person. It went around all over school. She eventually stoped talking to everyone. But one day after school she was on a park bench smoking...and her mom was looking for so i told her mom where she was and she was caught! When her mom saw her she took action and threw away all her cigerettes and told her "Anything that makes you less of who you are is not who you are." That saying spoke to me. She didnt come to school for three weeks! Apparently she was getting punished and doing volunteer work for homeless shelters around the state!! She heard so many stories that really spoke to her. She said it didn't feel like a punishment it felt life changing. When she came back she was changed for good and we were friends again! I was soooo happy. Her story inspired me to start ANTI-DRUG USE GROUP! I thought i could really make a difference on ally katzz! Anyone can join, just send me a shoutout! But when you join its your job to go on Abovetheinfluence.com to learn about drug use and how it could affect you then you will have to spreed the word of what you learned and about the club and when your in the club we can discuss anti drug use all over ally katzz! We Have to get 100 club members by September 3rd. We can do this! We can all be Above the influence!

Arghh, this has literally been the worst week for me. I dont wanna be a complainer and stuff but it has. I havnt been to school in like one week because i have been quite sick. I started off having a sore throat and Monday night i just couldnt sleep at all, tossing and turning and then getting up early the next day then i got a blocked nose and couldnt breathe, which made sleeping even worse as i had to sleep with my mouth open as my nose was blocked. I couldnt eat or drink because it was simply too painful. So mum goes to the shops and buys this syringe, it was neurofen for kids, its a liquid and you do it through the mouth all because i cant take tablets, i cant swallow them cause i always think i will choke, stupid huh? Thankfully the medicine tasted nice but did completly nothing. By Friday i still felt as worse as ever. I was meant to work the next day but had to call in sick and i was meant to go hang out with my friend Tien and go to the movies like i promised her, i had to cancel that also. So dad goes to the chemist and they give me this medicine for my nose and it makes me wanna puke, it tastes that bad and also doesnt work. Then to top it all off i get my period! My stomach hurts and i hate it. Why now, out of the WHOLE month it has to be now ): I  hope i get better soon its been 5 days and i normally dont get sick ):
Sorry that this blog had to be very complaining but im not forcing you to read.

For a study published last year, British researchers asked 12 healthy male college students to ride stationary bicycles while listening to music that, as the researchers primly wrote, “reflected current popular taste among the undergraduate population.” Each of the six songs chosen differed somewhat in tempo from the others.

The volunteers were told to ride the bicycles at a pace that they comfortably could maintain for 30 minutes. Then each rode in three separate trials, wearing headphones tuned to their preferred volume. Each had his heart rate, power output, pedal cadence, enjoyment of the music and feelings of how hard the riding felt were monitored throughout each session. During one of the rides, the six songs ran at their normal tempos. During the other rides, the tempo of the tracks was slowed by 10 percent or increased by 10 percent. The riders were not informed about the tempo manipulations.

But their riding changed significantly in response. When the tempo slowed, so did their pedaling and their entire affect. Their heart rates fell. Their mileage dropped. They reported that they didn’t like the music much. On the other hand, when the tempo of the songs was upped 10 percent, the men covered more miles in the same period of time, produced more power with each pedal stroke and increased their pedal cadences. Their heart rates rose. They reported enjoying the music — the same music — about 36 percent more than when it was slowed. But, paradoxically, they did not find the workout easier. Their sense of how hard they were working rose 2.4 percent. The up-tempo music didn’t mask the discomfort of the exercise. But it seemed to motivate them to push themselves. As the researchers wrote, when “the music was played faster, the participants chose to accept, and even prefer, a greater degree of effort.”

The interplay of exercise and music is fascinating and not fully understood, perhaps in part because, as a science, it edges into multiple disciplines, from physiology to biomechanics to neurology. No one doubts that people respond to music during exercise. Just look at the legions of iPod-toting exercisers on running paths and in gyms. The outcry when USA Track and Field banned headphones in 2007 at sanctioned races like marathons was loud and pained (and the edict widely ignored until it was revised last year). The neurologist and author Oliver Sacks has talked about personally experiencing the elemental power of music after he injured his leg mountain climbing and had to push himself slowly down the slope with his elbows. He told an interviewer: “Then I found the Volga Boatmen song going through my mind. I would make a big heave and a ho on each beat in the song. In this way, it seemed to me that I was being ‘music-ed’ down the mountain.”

Just how music impacts the body during exercise, however, is only slowly being teased out by scientists. One study published last year found that basketball players prone to performing poorly under pressure during games were significantly better during high-pressure free-throw shooting if they first listened to catchy, upbeat music and lyrics (in this case, the Monty Python classic “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”). The music seemed to distract the players from themselves, their audience and from thinking about the physical process of shooting, said Christopher Mesagno, a lecturer at the University of Ballarat in Victoria, Australia, and the study’s lead author. It freed the body to do what it knew how to do without interference from the brain. “The music was occupying attention that might have been misdirected otherwise,” Mr. Mesagno said.

In fact, it’s music’s dual ability to distract attention (a psychological effect) while simultaneously goosing the heart and the muscles (physiological impacts) that makes it so effective during everyday exercise. Multiple experiments have found that music both increases a person’s subjective sense of motivation during a workout, and also concretely affects his or her performance. The resulting interactions between body, brain and music are complex and intertwined. It’s not simply that music motivates you and you run faster. It may be that, instead, your body first responds to the beat, even before your mind joins in; your heart rate and breathing increase and the resulting biochemical reactions join with the music to exhilarate and motivate you to move even faster. Scientists hope to soon better understand the various nervous system and brain mechanisms involved. But for now, they know that music, in most instances, works. It eases exercise. In a typical study, from 2008, cyclists who rode in time to music used 7 percent less oxygen to pedal at the same pace as when they didn’t align themselves to the songs.

But there are limits to the benefits of music, and they probably kick in just when you could use the help the most. Unfortunately, science suggests that music’s impacts decline dramatically when you exercise at an intense level. A much-cited 2004 study of runners found that during hard runs at about 90 percent of their maximal oxygen uptake, a punishing pace, music was of no benefit, physiologically. The runners didn’t up their paces, no matter how fast the music’s tempo. Their heart rates stubbornly stayed the same, already quite high, whether they listened to music or not. That result, according to a 2009 review of research by Costas Karageorghis and David-Lee Priest, researchers who have extensively studied music and exercise, is likely due to the ineluctable realities of hard work. During moderate exercise, they write, music can “narrow attention,” diverting “the mind from sensations of fatigue.” But when you increase the speed and intensity of a workout, “perceptions of fatigue override the impact of music, because attentional processes are dominated by physiological feedback.” The noise of the body drowns all other considerations. Even so, about a third of the runners in the 2004 study told the researchers that they liked listening to the music, especially at the start of the run. It didn’t increase their speed or make the workout demonstrably easier. But it sounded nice.

And that result, obvious as it seems, may be the ultimate lesson of how and why music is effective and desirable during exercise, says Nina Kraus, a professor of neurobiology at Northwestern University in Illinois, who studies the effects of music on the nervous system. “Humans and song birds” are the only creatures “that automatically feel the beat” of a song, she said. The human heart wants to synchronize to music, the legs want to swing, metronomically, to a beat. So the next time you go for a moderate run or bike ride, first increase the tempo of some insidiously catchy Lady Gaga downloads (or Justin Bieber or Katy Perry or whatever reflects the current popular taste in your household), and load them on your iPod. “Our bodies,” Ms. Kraus concluded, “are made to be moved by music and move to it.”

MY FRIENDS ASK  ME WHY ALL THE TIME. I SAY, "SO I CAN AT LEAST KNOW THAT IT WON'T HAPPEN RANDOMLY IN CLASS OR AT THE BEACH OR SOMETHING!"

SOMETIMES THOUGH, I JUST CAN'T WAIT TO HAVE IT. BUT MY MOM SAYS, "HEY, YOU'LL BE TALL."

THAT SUCKS THOUGH CUZ THE AVERAGE HEIGHT OF A FULL GROWN MAN IS 5'10" AND I AM SUPPOSED TO BE 5'9". THATS GONNA BE SO SUCKY. + GUYS MY AGE ARE LIKE 4'!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Heyy :D  I can't believe I'm writing another blog like I said I would! ha ha, I'm usually not so good at that if you look at my previous blogs :/

Today I just wanted to write about exercise and healthy eating which is very important to me :)  I always try to eat healthy, although it's difficult sometimes with the food that is in my house :P  But I always try to exercise every day too!

I usually do Pilates because it's a great way to get muscles, but not too muscular, you know?  Ha ha :)  I try to do a cardio video everyday from Exercise TV too because it makes me sweat and makes me feel good after I've finished it!  I also use a ton of exercises from Girl's Life magazine because they have a section for a healthy lifestyle.  So I choose my favorite moves to do sometimes too :)  I do other vids too from Exercise TV for all different parts of my body; I try to work out every part of my body everyday (upper, lower, abs).

Soo, I was just wondering what you girls do to exercise, if you do?

Be sure to add my really super awesome friend Liyah<3CookieMonster :D  Thanksss

Have you ever wondered what it'd be like to be a vegetarian? Do you want to stop killing animalsfor your own personal diet? Do you want to become healthier?

Well as a lifelong vegetarian, i have your answers!

The type of vegetarian my family encouraged me to be is a little different then you might think. I can eat seafood like fish and shrimp but not things like chicken and beef. It might seem weird to you,but I have been eeating this way my whole life and it is normal for me!

There are many Pros to being a vegetarian. One of them is that you willlive longerthan most meat eaters. Eating so much meat can be bad for you and can cause heart attacks. Thats why you should substitute your meats for other things like beans and soy products.

If you decide to become a vegetarian but you dont know the kinds of things you should eat instead of meat, then you might be missing important parts of the food groups. But subsitutingall the following things will make you the healthiest you've ever been!

Heres a chart to help you out!

Instead of this.....try this!

Bacon/Sausage..."Fake" bacon and sausage. (Read below)

Hamburger......Fish Sandwich or "Fake" hamburger(Fish sandwiches arent THAT bad for you, but i wouldnt suggest eating them every day....and read below)

Hot Dog........"Fake" hotdog (Read below)

Chicken Fingers....French Fries (ok, they arent the healthiest but you cant always be 100% healthy!)

Steak.......SALAD! lol! (steak is HORRIBLE for you. Try a salad! They arent all bad. You can put stuff on it to make it taste better like grapes, almonds, rasins, cheese, olives...pretty much whatever you wannt!)

Turkey Sandwich....Veggie Sub(Ever tried a subwith just cheese lettuce tomatoes and veggies of your choice? Its DELISH!)

Tacos with meat......Tacos with Beans! (Just a bean burrito or taco with out meat is good and good for you!)

You might be thinking....what the heck is a "fake" hotdog? When you're a vegetarian you have less food to choose from then you did before. So Price Chopper came up with a solution! There are a lot of fake products like Chicken pattys, hamburgers, hot dogs, bacon, sausage...all the things you might miss if you decide to change your eating habits. They are made with soy products. But before you turn up your nose, encourage your parents to buy them! it might change your life.

I personally think they taste delicious but you meat eaters might think different because you are used to eating the regular stuff. But you should give it a try!

Ok to be fair to you guys....being a vegetarian isnt ALL good. There are a few setbacks. Like having to order special things at restaurants, (can i have the beef sandwich...with no beef?) eating before you go to a party, and bringing your lunch to school. But in the end it all pays off!

SO if you girls have any more questions PLEASE ask me!! Thanks for reading my blog!

♥,

Angela/ ♥Locol!c!ous♥

We tweens and teens love music, but could our love have gone a little too deep?

Teenagers + iPods = Dramatic hearing loss in our generation.

You heard me (I hope) today's generation of teenagers are losing their hearing at surprising rates and it's kind of scary. First sign of possible hearing loss? A ringing or buzzing in your ears.

People ages 12 to 19 years old were observed and doctors found a 30 percent increase in hearing loss with this generation than teens in the mid-90s. Even more alarming is that there's also a 77 percent increase in teens with serious hearing problems.”It's just not cool.

In 1994, 1 in 20 kids showed signs of hearing loss. Fast forward about a decade and hearing problems are much more common with 1 in 5 kids experiencing symptoms. In 2006, 6.5 million teens were affected presumably due to teens playing personal music players like iPods in their ears too loudly for too long.”

You'll hear it from me first, hearing loss is not something to joke around about. Not many of you know this about me but I have complete hearing loss in my left ear (a bad ear infection gone wrong when I was five, and I had to have surgery. I'm lucky I only lost hearing in my left ear and not my life.) Don't freak out, I'm not deaf or challenged when it comes to hearing, actually it's not that noticeable. You wouldn't even be able to tell I couldn't hear out of one ear. Not sure why you would in the first place question my hearing but it does come with disadvantages. I'm always leery of loud events, pep rallies, dances, sports games. And sometimes I find myself spelling or saying words incorrectly based on what I heard. And I'm not going to take any chances of losing any more hearing.

Am I sounding like a party pooper? Well I'm just looking at the reality of things, you can still go to all that fun, loud, stuff! In my case the damage is already done, no hearing aid will fix my loss, but you have the chance to make a difference in your generation, Don't loss your hearing over stupid things, that may seem cool now but you'll pay for later. That means keep the ipod jamming sessions on the down low, and be careful at loud venues, keep your hearing in check. Better safe than sorry.

For loud events I always have ear plugs in my purse and trust me they are so worth it, if not my ears would be ringing, and burning hot, not to mention I'd have a terrible headache! I am on the extreme end of hearing loss, but it is a serious thing to watch out for. Also my loss was caused by something I couldn't fix myself, but turning your iPod down a tadissomething you can do.

"What we're seeing is a big jump in the prevalence of hearing loss in a very short period of time, in less than one generation," says Dr. Roland Eavey. "That means we're on the front edge of an epidemic."

I hope this statement will turn around in the next few years, but it won't if WE don't do something about it. Have youexperienced a ringing or buzzing in your ears? How often do you listen to your ipod? Is the volume up allthe way? What do you think about these statistics? Share YOUR THOUGHTS!

Love from a Teen, Gina

Hey!

The other day,I picked up a magizine-and guess what??

SCHOOL LUNCHES AREN'T HEALTHY ENOUGH! They can increase the risk of obesiety, for example.

"But don't blame it on the schools,"the magizine says. "In this tough economy it's hard to afford healthier lunches for students."

So....what do YOU think? Should school lunches be healthier? Plz comment!!

Do you want some cute curls?! If you're at a sleepover doing hair, ask somebody at the sleepover if they can braid your hair in pigtails. If they can you might have to sit still instead of having a pillow fight! But once they are done, don't take them out, keep them in! When you are ready to go to sleep with your friends(if you are not staying up all night), keep them in. When you wake up take the braids out(if the rubber bands are still in), and carefully comb it. Don't comb it to rough or your hair will just turn puffy. Keep the curls in the rest of the day, or you can put in braids again so then your hair is super curly! Thank you for reading my blog! Please comment and tell me how your hair turned out! Thanks

<3LuvCookies!<3

P.S. I know, there is a cheeseburger for a pic! couldn't find hair pics so I just put up a cheeseburger lol! Peace! Please Comment Bye!

Hey everybody! i'm sorry i didn't do another tip the past two weeks, i was out of town. so, here's tip #2 :           last time I wrote about eating as long as you burn out the calories,  and how exercise can be fun without running on a tredmel. Although running on a tredmel is exercise. I said to just play hard, which is true. But if you don't mind I am going to suggest some thing that might help you get more in shape. Two things actually. first, when you are eating and something tastes REALLY good,  try listening to your body, but be sure to wait approximately 5-10 minutes  because it takes a while for your brain to catch up with your stomach to tell you when you are full. that is it  for the second tip. any questions? comment! check back next week for the third tip. See ya!

Yes this is true. According to studies girls living in the US are beggining puberty at earlier ages.

The findings suggest earlier development than what was reported in a 1997 study and show a worrying pattern, say the study's authors, led by Dr. Frank Biro of Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Girls who hit puberty earlier are more likely to engage in risky behavior, Biro's team notes, and might be at a higher risk for breast cancer, than their peers who develop later.

Doctors who study in this field have no idea what could be causing this trend, but obesity could be part of the answer.

In a study published today in Pediatrics, Biro's team examined about 1,200 girls aged 7 and 8 in Cincinnati, New York and San Francisco. Researchers, as well as the girls' doctors and nurses, used a standard measure of breast development to determine which girls had started puberty.

Compared to the 1997 findings from girls across the U.S., girls in the current study - especially white girls - were more developed at a younger age. As previous research has shown, there were also large differences in development based on race.

At age 7, approximately 10 percent of white girls and 23 percent of black girls had started developing breasts - compared to 5 percent of white girls and 15 percent of black girls in 1997, the authors write. Among 8-year-olds in the study, 18 percent of white girls and 43 percent of black girls had entered puberty - an increase from around 11 percent of white girls from 1997, but the same as black girls in that year. This is all very true, girls are looking much older than their age. In the "Discovery Girls" magazine they introduced the cover girls and some of them looked up to 2 years older than their true age.  This also makes girls unsecure with their bodies if they begin puberty earlier than their friends. Fortunately, I am satisfied with my body!  What do think about earlier puberty? Your reporter, Nikki♥

Hey chickas! I read this on an article, and thought I'd do a report, because I actually have this, and I wanted to make other girls' and their parents aware of this. According to the doctors and new research, girls are starting to hit puberty before than usual, like the age of 7 or even 8. In 1997, it started showing patterns, and sooner or later, doctors discovered that percosious pubertycan cause more high risks of breast cancers and risky behavior.

From girls all across the U.S., research found that girls had developed at a younger age and that for an 11 year old that looks like 15 or 16, people will start to interact with them at the age they look, as well as their friends and peers. For me, since I started to develop at around 7 and a half, I had to get an injection in the hip every month for TONS of years, so it could stop my growth and slow down my hormones. Yes, I'm almost twelve and I hear people thinking I look 13, maybe even 14-ish, and its true, because sometimes my dad mistakes me for an older teenager:P But I don't have any cancers or anything like that, which is good news:)

To all those who are reading this and may be concerned, go tell your parents if you may think that you are developing and are starting to have mood swings--also, check with a pediatrician, because they are very proffesional with this. They may send you to an endrocronologist or not to be tested, but from personal experience, they've really helped answer my questions and got me to the level I should be. However, percocious puberty means you have to many hormones, which means your brain thinks that you are ready to grow at a younger age, so endrocronologists help to stop that. Yet, since you have lots of hormones you can get tons of mood swings--for me, I had major depression thoughts and sometimes temper could be squeezed out of me! But don't be afraid to ask your parents, because they can help and they will understand, as awkward as it might be!!!

Okay, so if you have ANY questions or want to share your stories and concerns, comment or send me a shoutout! I'd love to hear from you guys!:) Okeydoeky, and school's on the way, so be sure that you're READY READY READY! :D If you need tips, you can read my latest blog (not this one)!

~Madi:3 (ps. may change my user, may not. tell me what you think!)
