My god, I have to find a way to get these gorgeous new iPods from heaven! I will definitely save up big time for the new iPod Shuffle, Nano or Touch, they are so darn cute! (;

Source: jsyk.com

Apple made another big announcement today, introducing three newiPodsfor the masses and an iTunes social network called Ping. There are a ton of new features on the iPods, which may even make you forget about wanting aniPhone 4.

The
iPod Touchis thinner and lighter than ever, and while it still plays all of your favorite music, it also can make FaceTime video calls and record HD video. As long as you have Wi-Fi, you can video chat with your friends just like on the iPhone 4. The device also has that sweet Retina display and Game Center, where you can challenge your friends and show all your scores and stats.

TheiPod Nanohas Multi-Touch, is newly redesigned and is smaller and lighter than the last generation. It's got a built-in FM radio and also has a built-in clip so you can wear it on the go. The newiPod Shufflehas clickable "ring" buttons VoiceOver technology, which allows users to go through their playlists without having to look at the device. Sweet! It also comes in fun colors like silver, blue, green, orange and pink, and even supports Genius playlists (finally).

Oh but that's not all. Apple also announced an iTunes update that will include
Ping, a new social network for music. If you have an iPod Touch or an iPhone, you can follow your friends to find out what they're listening to and follow your favorite artists to see photos, videos, tour dates and more. Apple CEO Steve JobsdescribesPing as "Facebook and Twitter meet iTunes."

The iPod Touch starts at $229, the Nano starts at $149 and the Shuffle is priced at $49. All of them will be available beginning next week, and those who are into Ping can download the iTunes update now. What do you think of the new generation of iPods? Do you think you'll use Ping or are you good on the social networking front?
Lol, i feel terrible but that is another original article. :P To see more of the darling new wonders of technology, head here:http://www.jsyk.com/photos/meet-apples-n ew-ipods/   My opinion:   Okay, so the whole thing is pretty AWESOME. Plus, Ping is definitely what I would call an iTunes Twitter. I have found that I like Twitter a lot, but as said before, I quite. Anywho. I would totally purchase the new iPods etc, & get Ping, BUT iPads are pretty delish to me, & the selling point for me is: on an iPad, you can read books. 'Nuff said. But anyway, since where I live you get an iPad for, like, $700, then the Nano & Shuffle sounds pretty good to me. (: Of course I still heart the iPhones, (Hello, B-Bot! :D) but the Touches are amazing too. Really, if I was in a store that had these eye-catching lovelies, I would start freaking out & asking if I could eternal servitude in return for those iPods. LOL! Not really. But anyway. What do you think? Are they fabulous, or not so much? Would YOU use Ping? Tell all. :P   Sarah [[♥♥♥]]

Hello girls! So September 1,2010 is Best Bones Forever's 1st birthday!I thought I could share some information about this wonderful site to you since it is all about girls and how inportant it is do tak care of your body!

So what is Best Bones Forever all about?

The Best Bones Forever!™ Campaign encourages girls to get active and eat more foods with calcium and vitamin D. Why is this important? Because getting lots of physical activity and snacking on foods with calcium and vitamin D arewhat's best for your bones! Healthy bones are important to help you grow strong and stay strong forever!

Interesting Facts About Our Body:

There are more than 200 bones in our body!Wow thats a ton to take care of!

Our bones are made of Collagen andCalcium phosphate

Bones also contain water, minerals, and cells that grow and change

When you're a baby, you have more than 300 bones, but by the time you're an adult you'll only have 206

2 Reasons Why You Need Calcium:

Calcium makes bones as strong as steel!

When your body makes new bone tissue, it first lays down a framework ofcollagen. Then, tiny crystals of calcium from your blood spread throughout the collagen framework. The hard crystals fill in all the nooks and crannies. Calcium and collagen work together to make bones strong and flexible.

Too little calcium makes bones weak.

Your body needs calcium to do lots of things. Calcium helps your muscles work so you can throw a softball. It helps send out nerve impulses. If you touch something hot, for instance, your brain quickly gets and sends the message to say, "Ouch!" and move your hand away. Calcium also helps your body heal from cuts and scrapes.

Every cell in your body needs calcium. Your bones store calcium for your blood and cells. If your body doesn't get enough calcium, which can be found in some foods and drinks, it takes it from your bones. And that can make your bones weak. From the day you're born, your bones are built and strengthened with calcium. In fact, when you're in your 20s, your bones will be their strongest ever.

Bone Vocab:

Calcium —a mineral that helps to form bones and keeps them hard and strong. Most of the calcium in the body is stored in bones and teeth. The remaining calcium is contained in body tissues, blood, and other body fluids. Calcium can be found in somefoods and drinks.

Bone-strengthening activity —any activity that produces a force on the bones and promotes bone growth and strength. This force is produced most often by impact on the ground in activities like running and jumping.

Bone density —also known as "bone mineral density," the degree of strength of the inside of the bones

So Girls what do you think?Do you take good care of your bones to keep your body strong and fit?Is any of this stuff new to you?Have you learned about this in school?Have you ever heard of this site?Do you think it is important to take care of your bones? Can you name every bone in your body with no help?I love to hear what you have to say after all thats what AK is for!

Don't forget to check out the awesome site!

www.bestbonesforever.gov

After checking it out I have some really great questions for you!

What did you learn from the site? What was your favorite part of it?Is there anything you think they should add to the site? What do you think of the logo? How would you rate it on a scale of 1-10?Comment and let me know!

xoxo Kate a girl with healthy bones!

On August 21st, a 14 year old Dutch girl named Laura Dekker set out the sea in hopes to be break the record as being the youngest person to sail around the world alone.  Peter Klarenbeek, her manager says that Laura is happy and everything is running smoothly and that "The weather is very good. There's a bit of a strong wind but ... it's no problem."

Laura plans on spending at least 2 months on the Canary Islands where she will catch up on her school work and have visits from her family while she waits for the Atlantic storm season to be over. Once she leaves the Canary Islands she plans on visitingthe Cape Verde Islands off West Africa before traveling to the Caribbean.

 < /span>

 < /span>

 < /span>

Althoug h she was able to sail a small boat across a lake when she was only six, many critics feel that she is too young to be doing such a dangerous thing. To better prepare herself, she invested in a stronger, sturdier boat and also took some lessons in first aid and sleep deprivation. The Dutch court decided she was well prepared and left the decision on her pursuing the journey up to her parents.

 < /span>

 < /span>

I don’t know about you all, but I would be too scared to do this all by myself. I thought just taking the train by myself or getting on the really tall ride that drops that always appears at fairs and carnivals was scary enough! I guess it just goes to show that you really CAN do anything if you set your mind to it. What do you think about what Laura Dekker is doing?

Who doesn't love Katy Perry?

Anyway.

HUGE round of applause goes out to the gals who wrote blog book reviews on Halo, My Fake Boyfriend, & Radiance. Excellent jobs!

I'm doing another blog all about me-don't you love those?- & it will be pretty crazy-as usual- enjoy!

My birthday is March 29th (:

I only have a dimple on one side...Holla!

I've been singing since I could talk, no lie.

My name Sarah means Princess, but without the H it would mean Warrior or something like that...(I like Warrior better than Princess, but hey, my birth certificate says that my name has an H. :P)

I'm obsessed with books, music, & did I ever mention Twilight?

My favourite food is -fill in the blank- I love so much! Ha ha.

My celebrity crush is Robert Pattinson *swoons here*

Ambitions: read my 'Future' blog (Tag: wishes & dreams...I think.) plus I want to be on Broadway.

I NEED a Daisy Rock guitar. (;

I've only been dancing for about a year, & I'm more 'advanced' than most girls who have been.

I love veggies (shocker! lol) & I'm a grammar stickler. (sometimes)

Well...Okayyy...I admit. If it's worth it, I'm a flirt. ;D

I hate spiders, but LOVE snakes. Ironic, huh?

I'm not allergic to anything except raspberries. (So, actually, I AM allergic to something, LOL!)

I love taking showers, I can spend a half in hour in a hot shower. I do everything, sing, think, name it.

*sniff* My sense of humor is crazy, like no one else thinks I'm hilarious, but I'll be on the floor laughing. :P

I have like 10 different laughs & I'm serious.

I got my inspiration for this blog from a video on YouTube.

Taylor Lautner is a childish dweeb. (Okay, so that's not a fact about ME but whatev.) Read these two articles:http://www.jsyk.com/2010/08/24/t aylor-lautner-sues-rv-dealership-for-emotional-dis tress/....http://www.jsyk.com/2010/08/31/taylor-la utner-challenged-to-a-push-up-contest-by-rv-dealer /...Do you still think TayTay is the sweet little cuddly pup he is?

Songs that go with this blog: We Got It- The Stunners, Saviour- Lights, Stay- Miley Cyrus & a couple others...Just play them while reading this. (;

I really really really want a boy who is my friend.

I'm addicted to Hot Topic, like their clothes totally describe me.

...My family & I have to go shopping. So,

I love you guys, don't terrorize little kids, keep acting like monkeys, only have candy once in a while, look at the stars every night, (<3) keep dreaming big, eat your veggies, charge your iPod & keep reading...Twilight. ♥

Sarah...a.k.a. Bella Trix (If thats how you spell it in Latin, it means female warrior.)

Hello girls! So many of you have already went back to school or will be very soon. So I thought I would make this blog with some tips and tricks to succeed at the new school year! On the fist day of school wear something comfortable. Its never fun to wear something that’s to tight or to big or itchy. If you get lost ask ask ask. The teachers are always willing to help you find a class so don't be afraid to ask for help. Make a good impression on your teachers. The first few days is what makes or brake your bond with the teachers. So be yourself but be sure to pay lots of attention to what they say so if they ask you something you are sure to know the answer. If none of your friends are in your classes... Sit up by the front of the room if you can. Usually no one sits their. Then people will sit by you and you might bake some new friends. If you have questions about the class ask your teacher. If the teacher was not clear on all of the rules ask. Its not worth getting in trouble because you did not understand the rules. So if you are not sure if you can chew gum or use pen just raise your hand and ask! If you forget your locker combo go to the office. At most schools the office keeps your locker combo in you file in case you forget it. Before you go to school if you think you may forget write it on your hand or in a notebook so you remember. Never talk when the teacher is talking. No matter who the teacher is or how nice they are they most likely will not like it when you talk at the same time they are. All that that will do is get embarrassed or sent to the office. Bring all the supplies needed on the first day. Bring all the supplies you need for school the first day. The teachers will all tell you what exactly you need for those classes. But if you bring all your stuff on the first day you will have it just in case. Pack your purse with some essentials. Pack your purse with lip gloss, lotion, tissues, pony tail holders, hair clips, mints, and deoterent. You never know what you may need throughout the day so its better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Oh and don't forget the cover up! If your school has rules about cell phones follow them. If you have to keep your phone off in your locker do it. Its not worth keeping it on vibrate in your pocket in case of an emergency. If there is one whom ever it is will be sure to contact the school so will know. Its better than getting you phone tooken away! I think I covered the basics! Now I have a few questions for you! Did you already go back to school? If so what day? Do you have any special or interesting classes for this year? What grade are you going into? Do you have any super nice teachers? How has it been so far? Have you made any new friends? If you have any questions or want advice about school or friends send me a shout out and let me know! I have not went to school yet I go back on the 7th.This year I have Home Ec. as my fist class so that will be interesting. xoxo Kate a school lover!

Hello girlies!! I'm sooooo sorry I havent been on in a few weeks!! Blame all the freakingg hw I've been getting and all the groups/orginizations I'm in :) lol

Anyway, lately I've been thinking some strange things. Actually, one thing in specific....

What would happen if 2012 actually happened, but you didnt survive [ :( ] but your diary did? And then civilization picked back up and all anyone had to unlock the past was your diary??

Personally, I dont own a diary, well, I did, but then I just stopped writing in it..Anyway, still, if I did, I probably wouldnt want a bunch of other people looking through it. I mean, what if my crush survived and looked through it!!! He might find his name like a bajillion times!!! HaHa. Anyway, what would happen to you??

Or, maybe, lets say you DID survive, but still, all they had was your diary...Would that be even worse for you?? HaHa.

Please comment because I really want to know everyone's reactions, plus I wanna say hi :)

HaHa. Well, I'll blog again ASAP. Love you girlies, and remember, NEVER SAY NEVER just YES I CAN!!! ;)

Quote of the Day : I hope that I'm still hot when I'm a million years old, like Betty White ;)

xoxoSimoneBieber

Cause you're a pretty little windstorm on the boulevard
Something like a Sunset, oh you're a shooting star
And I might drive myself insane
If those lips aren't speaking my name
....♥
Hi everyone!

Wow, I love that song, ha ha. Love Like Woe. Oh, the title of my blog: lyrics from a Demi Lovato song. I ♥ D. Love. She's amazing. :) Anywho.

I'm really happy today, you may have noticed. I have a new book to read today, (lol) I got some really great news yesterday, & tomorrow morning I have Ballet.

(Do you get it? Today, Yesterday, Tomorrow. <3)

Oh, this blog is going to be quite short actually, because I need to get started on school-work.

Nails: neon red, melon green...each nail is a different color. neon, melon, neon, melon, etc.

Mood ring: outer butterfly is dark blue, inner butterfly is green, purple, yellow, slight orange

Silly Bandz: yay! I have two now. ;) Scented glittery pink butterfly, glittery blue butterfly.

Hair: very curly & crazy, pulled back in medium-height ponytail.

Make-up: what make-up? I just wear eyeliner, lol!

Now for my much-coveted book list (upcoming books):

Extraordinary- Nancy Werlin

The Replacement - Brenna Yovanoff

Matched - Ally Condie

We'll Always Have Summer - Jenny Han

Belle Of The Brawl - Lisi Harrison

Nightshade - Andrea Cremer

[]

Well, I have five other books I am interested in that are on preorder (meaning I have already ordered them) & I will be writing book reports shortly. :)

Really nice books, huh? Check them out if you don't recognize the titles, it would totally be worth it!

So I wanted to do a really random blog like I usually do for my status updates, but right now, (as I like to say) my brain is on the complete fritz, (& here's another thing I like to say) I blame it on no Starbucks. ;D Have you noticed that whenever I change my screen-name it starts with Star? =D

Everyone shut up!! *answers phone* Haaaaiii mommy! (:

I love saying that, ha ha. <3

Confessions of the day:

1. If I could go back in time I would go back to the time of the cavemen...I would fit right in! (; I'm kidding.

2. I leave my bedroom window open at night for Edward Cullen. (;

3. My iPod is the best technology thingy I own, I would die without music.

Random stuff you may want to know about mwah:

(the questions are ones I found on an author's website, lol!)

Favourite dessert: super chilly chocolate cake with caramel mousse in-between the layers.

Favourite superhero: Edward Cullen. (;

Favourite time of day: early in the morning, late at night (the most magical tims of day...<3)

Favourite article of clothing: crazy tees (like Hot Topic) & crazy shoes (like Hot Topic) lol!

Favourite book: what?! No WAY am I choosing.

Favourite fictional father: Carlisle Cullen. (; lol. Actually, I really love the father from Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen.

Favourite candy: sour gummy cherries or green apples (just like the author! :D)

If I could have any job: ice cream namer, extreme photographer, professional dancer, Broadway actress, trazpeze artist, (anything crazy & extreme really. Seriously.) ....

If I was a beverage: Fanta Fruit Punch (Auddy knows why) or some exotic mix. lol

If I could have any superpower: flying! flying! flying! I've always wanted to fly. <3

Special talents/abilities include: tripping over flat surfaces, (hey! only really talented people can do that!) choreographing dances, the most flexible girl in the room, perfect cupcake maker, (LOL!) knowing EVERY old song that comes on the radio.

Well, I hope you know a lot more about me now. (;

Comment?

I saw a beat titled teen life. It struck inspiration! Some of what I have been lacking lately. Well I'm pretty sure you all know reporters life are no different than your own. Sadly I am not having to go yell at paparazzi to get away from my house…yet. I know you probably get tired of reading about my life's dilemmas, but I need some news stories to report on. (ideas?;) So back to the blog beat. I thought I would share what an average day in the life of an AK reporter is like! *cue dramatic music!*

So it's an average school night and I am sitting in the living room w/ Ma and Pops, with the fire warming our foot sockies.. Okay I'm getting carried away. My "Pops" lives in NM. And Sockies?

Let's start in the morning.

6:30 "Sensitive its true, Alligator tears cried over you"(If you can guess the song back-atcha) *Tap* *Groan* Reaches for phone and IPod. Checks email, twitter, and any other things I need to. I'm a busy girl. Get's up out of bed puts on glasses, zipper bracelet, and ring and kinda more or less stumbles into the bathroom.

Brusha brusha brusha! And makes em teeth shine!

Walks down the hall, getting dressed in a tee shirt and jeans. Walks into kitchen to say Good morning to her cousin, Tyler who is usually eating a brownie( great breakfast right?) and to her grandma. *Grabs a pop-tart* Cringes at bad after taste  from toothpaste but continues to eat her pop tart.

*Ding dong ding dong*

Its………seven o'clock. WOOPIEE!

I pack my bag, including my phone, camera, iPod, wallet, and any homework I had. Then I go get my saxophone and put it by the door. (I usually do other stuff but I don't want to bore you)

7:20 Off to the bus stop!

*gets on bus* I usually have my music playing my now..

Vroom Vroom vroom!

I get at school and walk in front of all the high-schoolers outside and walk through the main hall and back out to this patio thing. Say Hi to mi homies and such

Ding Ding!

Bell rings and I go into class. Is it me or is this blog dragging a little? Sorry gals I'm going to skip over to Lunch!

So me and Trace are walking to the cafeteria..it's a 5 minute walk. But usually race to eat the prison food! Just kidding our lunches are pretty good. But anyway Gobble gobble, me and Trace are usually the last ones done. So its back for the last 2 hours of school. On the bus, and right to my front home stoop.

4:00 My mom comes home, and usually my cousin and Emily. So let me give you a head count.

Its Tyler, Emily, my mom, my grandma, and me. It’s a zoo. I help Tyler w/ his homework and eventually get to my own. Then I practice my saxophone and piano. Then I finally come online.

6:00. The kids mom finally gets here. I shower and then eat dinner.

Anywhere from 9-11 I go to bed and listen to a disc of Harry Potter, one of the twilight books, or Percy Jackson. I have them as audio books :P

Slumber land awaits!

Let it be known anytime it wasn't against the rules I was listen to music.

So I'm sorry if this blog dragged like forever. I am kinda waiting for inspiration to slap me in the face. I want to say what wonderful comments you gals left on my previous blog! I'm getting called Snow White left and right now. I want to get a pair of yellow jeans and a blue shirt to be a "modern day snow white"

But for the ?'s answers

A.My nickname was. Lala's, after my favorite teletubbie :P

B.I am usually in bed by. 11.

A.I want to name my first child(if it’s a girl)Athena

B.I can touch my tounge to my nose!

A.I want to do something in the media arts!

C. for the last one!

Hi! I recently read an "odd" article about Pet Fasion Week in New York. People bring their dogs to this event and can buy $3,000 collars, winter coats, and lots more. But this is all for the dogs. Honestly, I don't think these dogs really appreciate this act and some might not consider them even dogs. THEY WALK AROUND IN DRESSES HERE PEOPLE! YES EVEN THE MALES!!!!!!!

Personally, I think this is WRONG. Dogs are meant to be loved, loyal, and played with. No matter which breed or gender no dog enjoys being a dress up doll. It's just the way it goes in their mind. Then again that is just my thought. What is yours? Post a backatcha with your opinion. Agree or disagree with me? Let me know.

Be like amermaid,

~Hadley!

Texting is a way of life with teenagers nowadays, but it's become so popular now teens can't put the phone down in class time. A study by textPlus found that 43% of teens aged 13-17 say that they text during classtime and of that group 17% say they text CONSTANTLY, not just once in a while. Something more interesting is that 26% say it's wrong to text in class and over half of the students admit they are texting kids in the same class as them. ~My source for this blog jsyk.com~

But these SMS conversations aren't just gossip about the cutest guy ("OMG! he smiled at me!) or what the latest Miss Know-It-All girl just said ("She's sooo OTT"). 22% say they've texted answers to their friends who are called upon in class, and some others also say they've downloaded and text-emailed exam answers to friends--basically a form of cheating (I found this out from an article on Google).

You might assume a teacher would see this going on, but that's not always the case. Lots of the teenage students insist they've not been caught once texting in class.  And it seems even parents are contributing to the mix! 'Rents seem to text their kids during schooltime, even though they know their kids are in class! No wonder it's so easy to keep getting away with it.

What do you think about this survey's findings? Do YOU ever text your friends in class? Have you ever texted answers? Do your parents ever load you with messages? I don't have a phone and I don't have any interest in getting one, either. But my brother has a Samsung Touch and as far as we know (he's truthful) he doesn't  text in class, but my mom DOES hit him up with text messages, I'll admit.xoxo, Florence

Today, my dog named Yoshi, acted crazy...

Our family was going biking, but only my dad and I were ready to go. We felt sorry for Yoshi, because he was whining to go on a walk, so my dad got the leash and we left to take him for a walk. We walked into an empty parking lot that we always go to. I had brought my dog's ball. Yoshi is very smart and a good boy, and we can trust him now to let go and he'll sit there unless we call him, or so we thought....

We took the leash off of him, or else he doesn't move when the leash is on the ground. As soon as my dad took it off, he started running towards the direction of home. My dad took off with the leash, and I with the ball.

I may be good on the track, 8:48 for a mile, but my dad and Yoshi were both way faster, and I could barely follow. My dog is smart, as I had said before, and for so many times we had gone the same route to that parking lot, and he ran on the way we always go.

When Yoshi got to the end of one sidewalk, he didn't hesitate to cross the street. Thank God Yoshi wasn't on the street, he ran on the sidewalk, and thank God there were no cars.

Halfway through the other sidewalk, he stopped for a few seconds and turned around to let us catch up. As soon as my dad got there, he ran some more. My dad got on the street so he could try to prevent Yoshi to hop off of the sidewalk. Yoshi paused again, and this time my dad caught him.

We walked him home the rest of the time, both of us panting. We were lucky my dad was really fast, and my dog somewhat smart. We will probably never, ever let him loose again. That was a really scary experience. If there were a car while he was crossing the street...

Let me know what you think about this by commenting!

True Jackson VP star, Keke Palmer, turns 17 today, and guess how she's celebrating? Keke is hosting a charity event for those in need! She wants people to donate $17, or any other amount they can, to help the less fortunate souls in this world. So far she has raised $5,767 and 288 people have donated. Keke's goal is $10,000.

This is what Keke personally wrote on her donation page.

"Hey guys,

I have been so blessed in my life to have great parents, wonderful friends, and fantastic fans!

To be honest I never even imagined that somewhere in the world kids are dying because they do not have clean drinking water. I knew that food was a problem; kids not having enough to eat, but I just assumed that everyone at least had access to water; water is free right?

I was wrong, there are places in the world where water is unsafe to drink, a friend of mine brought this to my attention saying he was going to try and help by donating money from his birthday, and I have a birthday coming up too and thought that would be a great idea!

I will be 17 on Aug 26th, I am asking friends and family instead of buying me a gift please send $17 dollars to MyCharityWater.org/KekePalmer I am asking my fans to donate only $10 (only if you can spare), and unlike a lot of charities 100% of all money collected goes straight to the community. I will be able to provide video to show all who donated where their dollars actually went, how amazing is that to donate money to help children and then watch how your contribution has saved their lives!

I have been working with charities that help children starting way back when I was in Akeelah and The Bee, but I have never done anything like this. I was just so moved by My Charity Water and wanted to help bring clean water to children, water should be clean and available to all people at least that is how I feel.

Please join me in my goal to raise $10,000 that will provide clean water to 500 people.

Keke"

Want to help reach the goal of $10,000 and give 500 people clean water? Donate here: http://mycharitywater.org/p/campaign?campaign_id=6 396

Happy 17th Birthday, Keke!

For a study published last year, British researchers asked 12 healthy male college students to ride stationary bicycles while listening to music that, as the researchers primly wrote, “reflected current popular taste among the undergraduate population.” Each of the six songs chosen differed somewhat in tempo from the others.

The volunteers were told to ride the bicycles at a pace that they comfortably could maintain for 30 minutes. Then each rode in three separate trials, wearing headphones tuned to their preferred volume. Each had his heart rate, power output, pedal cadence, enjoyment of the music and feelings of how hard the riding felt were monitored throughout each session. During one of the rides, the six songs ran at their normal tempos. During the other rides, the tempo of the tracks was slowed by 10 percent or increased by 10 percent. The riders were not informed about the tempo manipulations.

But their riding changed significantly in response. When the tempo slowed, so did their pedaling and their entire affect. Their heart rates fell. Their mileage dropped. They reported that they didn’t like the music much. On the other hand, when the tempo of the songs was upped 10 percent, the men covered more miles in the same period of time, produced more power with each pedal stroke and increased their pedal cadences. Their heart rates rose. They reported enjoying the music — the same music — about 36 percent more than when it was slowed. But, paradoxically, they did not find the workout easier. Their sense of how hard they were working rose 2.4 percent. The up-tempo music didn’t mask the discomfort of the exercise. But it seemed to motivate them to push themselves. As the researchers wrote, when “the music was played faster, the participants chose to accept, and even prefer, a greater degree of effort.”

The interplay of exercise and music is fascinating and not fully understood, perhaps in part because, as a science, it edges into multiple disciplines, from physiology to biomechanics to neurology. No one doubts that people respond to music during exercise. Just look at the legions of iPod-toting exercisers on running paths and in gyms. The outcry when USA Track and Field banned headphones in 2007 at sanctioned races like marathons was loud and pained (and the edict widely ignored until it was revised last year). The neurologist and author Oliver Sacks has talked about personally experiencing the elemental power of music after he injured his leg mountain climbing and had to push himself slowly down the slope with his elbows. He told an interviewer: “Then I found the Volga Boatmen song going through my mind. I would make a big heave and a ho on each beat in the song. In this way, it seemed to me that I was being ‘music-ed’ down the mountain.”

Just how music impacts the body during exercise, however, is only slowly being teased out by scientists. One study published last year found that basketball players prone to performing poorly under pressure during games were significantly better during high-pressure free-throw shooting if they first listened to catchy, upbeat music and lyrics (in this case, the Monty Python classic “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”). The music seemed to distract the players from themselves, their audience and from thinking about the physical process of shooting, said Christopher Mesagno, a lecturer at the University of Ballarat in Victoria, Australia, and the study’s lead author. It freed the body to do what it knew how to do without interference from the brain. “The music was occupying attention that might have been misdirected otherwise,” Mr. Mesagno said.

In fact, it’s music’s dual ability to distract attention (a psychological effect) while simultaneously goosing the heart and the muscles (physiological impacts) that makes it so effective during everyday exercise. Multiple experiments have found that music both increases a person’s subjective sense of motivation during a workout, and also concretely affects his or her performance. The resulting interactions between body, brain and music are complex and intertwined. It’s not simply that music motivates you and you run faster. It may be that, instead, your body first responds to the beat, even before your mind joins in; your heart rate and breathing increase and the resulting biochemical reactions join with the music to exhilarate and motivate you to move even faster. Scientists hope to soon better understand the various nervous system and brain mechanisms involved. But for now, they know that music, in most instances, works. It eases exercise. In a typical study, from 2008, cyclists who rode in time to music used 7 percent less oxygen to pedal at the same pace as when they didn’t align themselves to the songs.

But there are limits to the benefits of music, and they probably kick in just when you could use the help the most. Unfortunately, science suggests that music’s impacts decline dramatically when you exercise at an intense level. A much-cited 2004 study of runners found that during hard runs at about 90 percent of their maximal oxygen uptake, a punishing pace, music was of no benefit, physiologically. The runners didn’t up their paces, no matter how fast the music’s tempo. Their heart rates stubbornly stayed the same, already quite high, whether they listened to music or not. That result, according to a 2009 review of research by Costas Karageorghis and David-Lee Priest, researchers who have extensively studied music and exercise, is likely due to the ineluctable realities of hard work. During moderate exercise, they write, music can “narrow attention,” diverting “the mind from sensations of fatigue.” But when you increase the speed and intensity of a workout, “perceptions of fatigue override the impact of music, because attentional processes are dominated by physiological feedback.” The noise of the body drowns all other considerations. Even so, about a third of the runners in the 2004 study told the researchers that they liked listening to the music, especially at the start of the run. It didn’t increase their speed or make the workout demonstrably easier. But it sounded nice.

And that result, obvious as it seems, may be the ultimate lesson of how and why music is effective and desirable during exercise, says Nina Kraus, a professor of neurobiology at Northwestern University in Illinois, who studies the effects of music on the nervous system. “Humans and song birds” are the only creatures “that automatically feel the beat” of a song, she said. The human heart wants to synchronize to music, the legs want to swing, metronomically, to a beat. So the next time you go for a moderate run or bike ride, first increase the tempo of some insidiously catchy Lady Gaga downloads (or Justin Bieber or Katy Perry or whatever reflects the current popular taste in your household), and load them on your iPod. “Our bodies,” Ms. Kraus concluded, “are made to be moved by music and move to it.”

What are the chances of being in a band that is made up of self taught musicians from a small town in an area known as the quiet corner and then coming out with an album only months later? Seems next to IMPOSSIBLE right?  Well, it wasn’t for the members of the band Adirondack.

Let's rewind to the beginning, how did it all start? Seth, the guitarist, wanted to start a band, but the bands at his boarding school wouldn't be together for long since everyone has to go home for the summer.  So he got in touch with Drew, who plays the drums, and asked if he was interested in starting a band.  Drew said yes and then got in touch with James, the bassist. They practiced playing from 11-5 in the music room of a school, when the music teacher heard them playing.  The music teacher, Tim, happened to produce music for other local musicians and the boys got Tim to produce their music.

Seth writes the lyrics and chords, sometimes with the help of Drew, and based on the chords, James will come up with a bass line.  When I asked them what inspires their music, Seth told me "Our music is inspired by the three sides of the rock spectrum that we come from. Drew really likes 90s to new age pop punk, James loves classic rock, and a lot of my guitar playing is influenced by a lot of grunge. So our music is really inspired by, and a fusion of, all three of those genres. We come up with some pretty interesting stuff because of the contrasting genres that we like, and I think the record shows that."  Drew told me that personal events, such as love, pain, and the good times also inspire their music.

One day they took a break from practice and sat down in adirondack chairs.  James told me he "saw the adirondack chairs and commented on the comfiness of them, and that was it! We are Adirondack, named after the comfiest chair!!" Yes, they named their band after a type of chair haha.

Their single "Chlorine Rocket" came out on the 22nd of august (there's a link at the bottom, check it out!) and their first private gig is actually tomorrow, the 28th.

When I asked them who their musical idols are Seth told me his was Kurt Cobain because "To be blunt, his voice, his lyrics and his guitar playing just really get me. They're the sound of a man who poured every ounce of his existence into every single note that he played or sang. He refused to fake his music, and showed the world what grunge was all about. Kurt didn't care whether the world was going to accept it or not, it was true music. That's what he wanted. And that's what the world got, and would excitedly become apart of. And that's how I create my music. The words I write, the chords I put together, are not fake. As cliche as it may sound, my music comes from my soul, my emotions, and like Kurt, my very existence. Without him, I would not be a frontman, let alone be playing guitar. He's inspired me beyond words." James told me "Jimmy Page and Robert Plant are my idols/influences because Led Zeppelin has been my favorite band since I was eight. I've always loved them." and Drew told me "Oh, I have so many. But Bowling For Soup was my first. That album means so much to me. When I was eight, my mom bought it for me. My brother gave her the idea earlier."

As I said here's their single:

http://www.youtube.com/wa tch?v=YelAme9yjqk

And Don't forget, their album comes out this fall!!

Hey girlies!

Seems that update blogs are the trend today! Oh, why the heck not . . . Lots has been going on, and it's been so amazing! Also, like Gina, I don't usually do blogs like this, so I hope you enjoy!

First of all, the beginning of August was amazing because . . . Get ready for it . . . It was a cultural festival in my city! Aaaaand . . . I was an ambassador! Basically, my duties involved being at my pavilion 24/7 the first week greeting people, sitting our VIPs, giving tours of our cultural display, and dancing! It was sad to see my pavilion over, but . . . Next week was upon me! I went to go visit about 18 other pavilions all showcasing another culture for free as a VIP! There was a LOT of good (free!) food involved as well! It was an amazing experience . . . I would definitely do it again in a heartbeat!

My sis got braces! She looks SO cute . . . Really! Also, I spent a lot of time with my best friend and other good friends . . . Sleepovers and bike rides galore! I also had a fabulous time at my friend's party . . . We took like 50 pictures jumping off her pool!

I went to the Canadian Women's Open! It was in my city this year, and my uncle gave us a free pass! Since kids 15 and under are free, we went to go enjoy a day of great golf . . . We actually went to go see the pro-am, which means pro and amatures are playing together, and the pros give tips! It was really neat to see golfers from all over the world, and even though I don't know much about golf . . . Heck, I haven't even held a club before a couple of days ago, but I putted for charity and got it in the hole! Yay! (See this is a big accomplishment for me . . . You don't want to go mini golfing with me . . . It involves the ball falling in the fake pond and the club stuck in those sand things, haha!)

I also went to go see a great musical called Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat . . . It was fabulous and so professional! I really admire people who can perform night after night . . . It's shocking, and I know from experience how tiring it is, and they can still do an amazing job!

Up next month: School! I'm going into Gr. 10, still at the same school, and I'm really excited! I'm also going into the IB programme, which means I'm doing Gr. 10 AND 11 this year, so wish me luck because I'm going to be SO busy! Oh well . . . It's totally worth it!

My birthday!! Yay! I'm super excited, I'm having a sleepover/ bonfire with some of my close friends, and it's going to be AWESOME! Also . . . Shall I be revealed? What do you gals think of me posting a REAL pic of me? Here's a little sneak peek to hold you over . . . Me when I was little! Let me know!

-Ali

August is coming to a close, one more week and it's September, crazy right? “Where did summer go? It just went by so fast...” blah blah blah we have heard that and said it ourselves all too much so that's not what this blog is about! - Honestly fall is my favorite season, and I'm actually kind of glad to see summer go.

What I mean to say is it's the end of the month and it's time for an update on my life. I don't write these often, most of my blogs are reports of some sort or another so this is just a random “Teen Life” blog.

Yes that is me in the picture, holding up my AUTOGRAPHED copy of Scumble! It arrived in the mail two days ago and is now waiting for me to sit down and devour the adventure! I'm so excited, and the thrill of owning a personally signed book by Ingrid Law, has not washed away. My heart is SO happy! - Thanks so much to Ingrid for taking the time to sign/send me a copy, for her super creative answers in the interview! (check it out if you haven't already, she rocks!) and for writing her own blog post about the experience (which you can see on her blog!) Allykatzz rocks. :D

I don't think I mentioned this in my last “update” but I got a part time job! (my first one outside my family and volunteering!) So I work at this small gift shop in the town over from me. I'm loving it so far and the great thing is I can work through the school year, since I'm home schooled. The owner (a former teacher) doesn't mind if I bring school work with me on slow days too!

My family recently got a second dog, his name is Riley, and my is he cute! Picture later?

Okay so really this should be in next month's update but I can't help but spill the beans!!! I'm too excited, and I can not wait until September 30th! Why you may ask??? Myself, my best friend Leslie, and my Mom are going too see JASON MRAZ in concert!!!! I'm thrilled if you can not tell by my excessive use of explanation points! So I'll definitely write a blog about that. - Even my mom is excited, we are all huge fans of his!

Speaking of Leslie, my awesome friend and I went on a shopping spree last weekend! (I'm wearing my new tunic shirt/dress in the picture. I will be wearing that all fall, with my super comfy leggings! I love fall clothes. BTW the belt in the picture, yeah I love it! (My parents are sick of my talking about it. lol)

I got my hair cut. I guess that is obvious in the picture, let me tell you a girl with so much hair, very thick too, should not have long hair! It just doesn't work on me. I was inspired by Emma Watson's new pixie cut- I couldn't go that short, I'm not that brave but I did get pretty short and I LOVE it!

Updates really should be a mix of happy and sad, and unfortunately I due have one piece of upsetting news, my brother's year old kitten disappeared almost 3 weeks ago now. She hadn't been eating much food and had a cold, we don't know what happen to her. But we have hawks, coyotes, and a highway super close to our home. I'd rather not think about what happen to her, she was the baby of the house, but I can't help but wonder.

Well this weekend, today in fact, we are having a garage sale. (next weekend too!) So I shall be out in the garage, with the country radio station cranked up (not too loud after my recent hearing loss blog) and a good book in hand, I'm thinking Scumble!

Let me know what you have been up to as well! Comment with your own update OR direct me to your BTS blog! I want to know what is going on in YOUR so-called life! xo

Love from a Teen, Gina

I recently interviewed singer and songwriter, Cady Groves, at a show on the Stuck On Repeat Tour (with Stereo Skyline, Cash Cash, and The Audition also). Cady is signed to RCA Records, which is a major record label. Cady is from Oklahoma City, OK and is now 21 years old. You can check out her music on iTunes; including her full length album "The Life Of A Pirate" and her EP "A Month of Sundays". You can also download remixes of her songs on her PureVolume page, http://www.purevolume.com/cadygroves. If you check out her music, let me know if you like it. :)

Q:  What inspired you to be a musician?
A: I just had a lot of bad stuff happen, that leads to having a lot of things to say, so I just started writing songs a lot. I never knew I could sing but I tried it and it was just fun.

Q: Do you feel like there is more pressure and stress on girls in the music business?

A: Yes and no. Yes, if you’re weak and no if you’re not. I don’t care what anyone thinks about me and that goes with my bad childhood or whatever. If they hate me, they hate me, if they love me, I love them back, you know? It’s just whatever. I’m doing what I love to do and that’s all. I’m not doing this for any other reason than I cannot picture myself doing anything else. I’ll play out of the back of a van, if I have to.

Q: Is it hard being with guys all of the time, or have you adjusted?
A: I like it. I mean, I grew up with five brothers so it’s just like normal for me… I get along better with guys than girls. Girls are tricky, and guys aren’t. Guys are just so simple.

Q: Do you have any musical influences?
A:Yes! I really love Miranda Lambert and Paramore… and I really look up to William Fitzpatrick… And I like all my friends that are in bands, too. Like I love The Summer Set, I love The Cab, I love Never Shout Never, and Plug In Stereo… all those people. I just love all my friends in bands.

Q: Do you have any other talents besides singing?
A: I’m double jointed! And I’m also really annoying, if I want to be. Or, I don’t know, I think that my talent is that I’m just like a different person every day. Like everyone I’ve ever met has said that they can’t figure me out ‘cause I’m so weird. Maybe it’s because I’m crazy? But who knows?

Q: If you could do a duet with any singer or band, who would it be?
A: Oh wow! Justin Timberlake or… Miranda Lambert… Rascal Flats! Rascal Flats!

Q: Since this whole tour is full of boy bands, if you could date any guy in any of the bands, who would it be?
A: [Laughs] Let’s not talk about that!

Q: What advice would you give to girls trying to make it in the music business?
A: Don’t try too hard. If you’re trying to make it in this business… I didn’t even try at all! I just did it because I wanted to. I mean, I tried… That’s a lie. I tried. I didn’t try to be accepted by people. I tried it in my music; I tried to show people a relatable side of someone… Everyone feels alone, that’s one thing that I’ve realized. One thing is to just always be honest. Just keep going. You’ll have a long career if you’re honest.

Q: Is anything new happening soon that you want to tell fans about?
A: I’m making my big RCA album right now and I’m super excited! You’re going to freak out. I’m in demo making mode right now so its insane working with all these huge producers but it’s really fun.

Q: How would you describe your music who’s never heard of you before?
A: I would say if Hayley from Paramore, Miranda Lambert, Never Shout Never, Taylor Swift, and Dixie Chicks had a less talented baby… that would be me.

Thanks for reading. <3 :) Hope you enjoyed it!

- Angie.

14-year old Dutch schoolgirl Laura Dekker begins her long journey to be the youngest person in the world to sail around the world BY HERSELF.

A few years back, when Laura was around the age eleven or twelve, she tried to break that record, but Dutch court authorities stated that she was underage. Her parents fought a lengthy court case against the authorities, and eventually now Laura can set off on her journey.

She set off two days ago (from Portimao) , and her trip is expected to take around two years. Laura's 38 foot boat, called Guppy, was bought especially for the trip, and she has had only two weeks to get used to her new vessel. Her first stop on her journey will be the island of Madeira, and she will sail on to the Canary islands before facing the challenge of an Atlantic crossing to Barbados. It is said that she will record her trip with a camera and will be in constant radio contact with a support team and passing ships. Her trip will not be non-stop, though, she's making longer stops for more than a day in Singapore, Bali, the Maldives, Galapagos and other ports.

Laura has no concerns as she was born on a boat and began sailing at the tender age of six. "Don't forget, I was born on a two-master as well," she wrote on her website homepage which will record the progress of her journey. But did you know the record has already been set by Australian teenager Jessica Watson. Watson completed a non-stop unassisted round-the-world trip a few days before her 17th birthday. Laura's goal is to break this record. But how will she do it with ships following her around, is my question?

What do you think of brave Laura Dekker? Do you think she'll be a hero and example of many teens out there? Do you think she's going to make it? I personally wish Laura the best of luck! :) xoxo-Florence
