What's Up With Movie Ratings?

from Manitoba, CANADA
on Tuesday, July 6, 2010

Hey girls!

When going to catch a flick with your besties, or renting an old favourite with your family, do you ever notice the little sticker on the poster or case that says the rating? Have you ever thought a rating of a movie wasn't fair, or should be lower or higher? Do you even pay attention to the ratings in the first place? Why do we even have them? Here's a little bit about movie ratings . . .

The CARA, or Classifications & Rating Administration was born on November 1st, 1968 when a group set out to make parents and other people aware of what was in the films that they or their kids wanted to see. This, of course, was before the internet and other movie rating and review websites sprung up! Basically, they wanted a voulntary, non-governmental system which would be based on a group of parents viewing the movie and deciding what most other parents would think about the movie, and what THEY would rate it. Movie producers submitted their movies, and the board rated them. They also partnered with the NATO, or the National Association of Theatre Owners to make sure they would inforce the rules of admitting no unaccompanied children to an R rated movie, or no kids under 17 at ALL with the NC-17 rating. The NATO includes the largest cinema chains as well as hundreds of independent theatre owners, which represent over 29,000 movie screens, not even counting Canada!

So what exactly is a "rating"? It's the age the parental review board thinks a person should be before watching this movie. G means it contains nothing parents would find "offending" for their kids, PG means parents should express caution because the movie might contain something they don't want their kids to see, and PG13 basically means the same thing except that some stuff might not be approprite for tweens. R means that kids under 17 aren't allowed without their parent or adult guardian with them, and NC-17 means that NO kids under 17 are allowed whatsoever. This rating usually goes with R rated movies. For every rating besides G, they include snippets on why they rated the movie the way they did, including themes and content such as sex, nudity, violence, language, and drug use. They also have a thematic elements section, which includes stuff that doesn't fit in the previous categories like death, verbal abuse, coming-of-age issues, and other things that everyone might not agree on/ want their kids to see such as abortion.

So are movie ratings fair? Personally, for some movies, I don't think they are, because even though they cover mature stuff, I think a wider audience should be allowed to watch them, and for some movies, I think the rating should've been higher, because I see younger kids at the movie being really disturbed by it, especially cartoon violence that might scare REALLY little kids (Perfect example: When I was little, I was scared of Monsters Inc, even though it's rated G, which means it's good for everyone.) As a huge movie fan, I think movie ratings are good, but now with websites that offer a quick overview on the plot, and tell you in specifics the things you should be worried about, and what's "good" about the movie, like Common Sense Media, movie ratings seem kind of dumb, because they offer so little about the movie. Do your parents judge if you can go to a movie or not just on a rating, or do they check out a review website first? Do they even care about ratings unless they're NC-17? What do YOU think?

Love from a movie lover,

Ali

“Yeah sometimes I think PG- 13 movies should really be PG. I think one PG- 13 movie i saw had just one bad word in it and that was all. But sometimes the ratings can be right. But sometimes for me the ratings are off.”

“Well, I don't really have a problem with movie ratings since I'm almost 16, but I would love to see some movies with rated r ratings like the Hangover & Sex in the City, but I'm not 17 yet. You're right some movies like the House Bunny and The Proposal have nudity scenes, but they are rated PG 13. ”

“" i agree with EmoPrincessa most ratings dont agree with their movies..."”

from EmoPrincess♥ on Aug 2 at 01:56 AM
“I don't think that ratings are very fair. Once I watched a movie that was R, and it was fine, there was only one point where a guy got shot...and they didn't even show it! There was nothing else! So sometimes they are a little bit overreacted, and sometimes like Breaking Dawn is gonna be PG, but it's going to have lots of sexuality and stuff. So ratings are slightly weird sometimes.”

from V on Jul 15 at 01:45 PM
“I totally think that ratings are almost ALWAYS way off, but it doesn't really matter, seeing as how noone pays attention to them anyway. And ali? you might think being afraid of monsters inc. is bad, but my brother used to be totally scared of Dumbo, that movie with the cute elephant. ”

“I don't think it's the ratings fault, I think it's how much a parent or guardian is willing to let their children go see a movie for themselves. I don't like the NC-17 rule, but going to an R rated movie with an older person is fine with me.”

from 080tigereyes080 on Jul 7 at 12:52 PM
“I don't really pay much attention to the movie ratings. I can usually tell by the previews whether or not I will enjoy the film. When I was younger my parents would look at the rating, but know they trust my judgement.”

from MegaMe on Jul 7 at 11:35 AM
“i hate ratings but my parents prob would let me see a rated r if there wasnt nudity and other things.(but i would rather see pg-13) and just like cencering tv it just shows that parents arent always watching wwat there kids r seeing”

from oriGINAlity95 on Jul 7 at 06:32 AM
“Honestly I don't care about the movie ratings, my family is really open with movie watching it's our family thing, we watch a movie after dinner and hang-out. My brother and I have seen all ratings and it's not a big deal. Occasionally my brother will leave and watch a tv show in his bedroom if he doesn't like or want to see what were watching (usually romances movies, come on 11 year old boys have no part in that!) Or when my dad or mom says he probably wouldn't be comfortable watching it.... But I'm open to anything, it's just a movie and sometimes I think the ratings are quite stupid, your own parent makes the decision whether you watch or don't watch it in the end, so why go through the rating system? When I was younger we didn't watch certain things, of course but now that I'm older, and my brother is too our movie choices are pretty lax. I like it that way and it just shows how much our parents trust us and think we are mature enough to handle it. (which we are and have been for some time) So yeah, great blog Ali! Your creative mind is definitively spinning!!! (You'll love this yesterday I was on the phone with Leslie (I've talked about her right?) Well we were planning a movie night and figuring out how long each movie was we wanted to watch, and I was squinting at one of the discs, and reading it out loud, "Okay it's pg-13 can you handle that? (kidding with her) oh wait it's pg in Canada, man! Their ratings are always so low compared to ours, You can watch practically everything!) Hee hee well I'll explain that more when we talk! xoxo-Gina GREAT BLOG! :D”

“I hate film ratings! (I only care about R and above) My parents OBVIOUSLY don't understand PG-13 just means if you're under 13 parents are suggested! I'm glad they don't rate books! Nikki♥ P.S Ali- clever blog!”

from PeaceLoveHappiness101 on Jul 6 at 06:07 PM
“Personally, It matters to me, What would you feel like if a 5 year old was watching a movie like The Twilight Saga: Eclipse?! There are some ~gorey~ parts in there, and I don't recommend it to people as young. So, I really care about movie ratings..,”

from lilgirly1 on Jul 6 at 05:52 PM
“I think it is true that sometimes they are off. :) Sometimes I think there are PG movies that should be PG 13.”
